UNDERSTANDING LIGHT!

You asked for it so here it is – the first in a series of seminars on the actual science of hydroponic and controlled environment chamber growing.

Of all the elements necessary for successful growing, light is perhaps the most important and least understood! Spend an afternoon with commercial hydroponics consultant Dr. Tomato and finally understand what light is, how your plants use light, what their specific requirements are and how to meet those needs. Separate the science from the hype!

Topics will include:

What is light anyway?

How plants use light.

Wavelengths and their impact on plant growth.

How do we accurately measure light?

It’s all about intensity, wavelength, and duration!!!

Why you MUST understand what daily light integral means!

What type of light system is best for your needs – LED, T5, HPS, MH, PLASMA?

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR PLANTS NEED TO GROW!

Controlled environment chambers

GREETINGS FELLOW GROWERS:

The past growing season saw a huge increase in the number of people seriously pursuing hydroponics as a method of growing their food, flowers, herbs etc. As they look into the mechanics of growing hydroponically (especially on line) they can run into a seemingly insurmountable wall of confusion surrounding the areas of lighting, nutrients/fertilizer, growing mediums, ventilation, system choices and so on. My goal is to take the mystery and confusion out of the world of hydroponics (both outdoors and indoors) and present the science and facts in a concise and understandable way. Those of you who have visited Blue Seal in Rochester on Saturdays know that I am there to answer any questions you might have and to discuss products and systems that would best meet your hydroponic/indoor growing goals.

In addition to being at Blue Seal on Saturdays (I am not an employee of Blue Seal), I do a lot of lecturing around the region. In my lecturing travels one subject in particular seems to create a LOT of angst and confusion – LIGHTING.  A properly designed and executed lighting system can be one of the – if not THE – most important elements of a successful growing program. A poorly designed or executed lighting system can mean disappointment or outright failure. The choices in lighting systems can be VERY confusing. Indeed, much (if not most) of the online information can be misleading at best and very few people who work in the sales end of the hydroponics industry actually know/understand the complex science of light/lighting. The result is all too often the purchase of a system that is not the proper match for your specific needs. The wrong system equals poor plant performance.

If you are serious about pursuing hydroponics/indoor growing as part of your program – then you need to understand light and lighting. I have invested a great deal of time and effort into putting this educational seminar together. It is designed to teach you what you need to know about light and lighting systems. I can safely say that you probably could not find this amount of specific information on lights/lighting systems anywhere outside of a University setting.
